This is due to a variety of reasons, but usually its due to security (banking apps) or\u00a0<a class=\"post__link--sidebar\" href=\"http:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/what-is-drm-and-why-does-it-exist-if-its-so-evil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Digital Rights Management<\/a>\u00a0(video apps).<\/p>\n<p>The worry is that rooted devices, if compromised, have access to more sensitive information thanks\u00a0to their unrestricted access, as well as the fact that users could find and extract normally hidden DRM content on their devices using a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/root-explorer-reach-deep-android-file-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">file manager with root access<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But you\u2019re the kind of person who roots your Android device and refuses to let others tell you what you can and cannot do with it, so let\u2019s work around this annoyance.<\/p>\n<h2>Install Xposed<\/h2>\n<p>The Xposed Framework is a super handy app that allows you to <a class=\"post__link--sidebar\" href=\"http:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/customize-your-phone-without-flashing-a-rom-with-the-xposed-framework\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">customize your rooted Android phone<\/a> without flashing a custom ROM. Before installing it, though, make sure that in your security settings you have checked the option to allow the installation of apps from \u201cUnknown sources\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"post__img-holder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted   image\" src=\"http:\/\/main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Android-Settings-1.png?69b314\" alt=\"Android Settings 1   How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now go ahead and install the Xposed Framework. The quickest and easiest way is\u00a0to go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220912061533\/https:\/\/repo.xposed.info\/module\/de.robv.android.xposed.installer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">official Xposed website<\/a> on your Android device and download the apk file. Once downloaded, tap on the file to install it.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"post__img-holder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted   image\" src=\"http:\/\/main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Install-Xposed-1.png?69b314\" alt=\"Install Xposed 1   How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, Xposed by itself doesn\u2019t do you much good; you\u2019ll need RootCloak to really get anything done.<\/p>\n<h2>Install RootCloak<\/h2>\n<p>Open up Xposed and go into the Download section as shown below. All of the available modules will be listed in alphabetical order, so you can either scroll through\u00a0or search for RootCloak.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"post__img-holder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted   image\" src=\"http:\/\/main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/RootCloak-1.png?69b314\" alt=\"RootCloak 1   How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tap on RootCloak, and it will bring up the page shown below. Download the most current version, which as of now is 1.4.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"post__img-holder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted   image\" src=\"http:\/\/main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/RootCloak-2.png?69b314\" alt=\"RootCloak 2   How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Accept the installation, and the module is installed. But it won\u2019t do anything without a reboot. If you\u2019re running Android 4.1 or higher, you can select \u201cActivate and reboot\u201d from your notification pane,\u00a0which will automatically turn on the RootCloak module and restart your device. You\u2019ll need to grant the Xposed Installer root access to do this, as shown below.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"post__img-holder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted   image\" src=\"http:\/\/main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/RootCloak-3.png?69b314\" alt=\"RootCloak 3   How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re running Android 4.0 or lower, or you just didn\u2019t get a notification, you can activate the module manually from within Xposed as shown below. Just check the box next to RootCloak under the Modules section. Remember to reboot your device afterwards.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"post__img-holder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted   image\" src=\"http:\/\/main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/RootCloak-4.png?69b314\" alt=\"RootCloak 4   How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"img__sharer\"><\/div>\n<h2>Tweak RootCloak If Necessary<\/h2>\n<p>RootCloak automatically enables certain apps, but it\u2019s possible that it doesn\u2019t cover the specific app that you\u2019re trying to use.\u00a0There is a list of all the apps that RootCloak is confirmed to work with over on the <a href=\"http:\/\/forum.xda-developers.com\/xposed\/modules\/mod-rootcloak-completely-hide-root-t2574647\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">XDA Developers Forum<\/a>, but if you want to give something a try that\u2019s not activated by default, you\u2019ll need to play with RootCloak\u2019s settings.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"post__img-holder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted   image\" src=\"http:\/\/main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/RootCloak-5.png?69b314\" alt=\"RootCloak 5   How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Access RootCloak\u2019s menu either through the RootCloak icon that is now in your app drawer, or through the Modules section of Xposed. Once there, click on Add\/Remove Apps, then tap the + icon in the upper right. This will show you a list of all the apps on your device, and you can select the one that you want enabled. You\u2019ll have to reboot for the changes to take effect.<\/p>\n<h2>The Results<\/h2>\n<p>It works exactly as it should.<\/p>\n<p>Below\u00a0you can see the error notifications I got when trying to run <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140922185452\/https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.res.bby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Best Buy CinemaNow<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161212185932\/https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.fde.DomesticDigitalCopy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fox Digital Copy<\/a>\u00a0before installing RootCloak.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"post__img-holder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted   image\" src=\"http:\/\/main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/CinemaNow-Fox-Blocked.png?69b314\" alt=\"CinemaNow Fox Blocked   How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But after installing RootCloak, I was free to access these apps without a problem.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"post__img-holder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted   image\" src=\"http:\/\/main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/CinemaNow-Fox-Accessed.png?69b314\" alt=\"CinemaNow Fox Accessed   How To Trick Apps Into Thinking Your Android Is Not Rooted\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"img__sharer\"><\/div>\n<h2>Your Mileage May Vary<\/h2>\n<p>Even though this trick is awesome, it won\u2019t work for all devices. Since there are so many apps that could search for so many signs of rooting, it\u2019s impossible for RootCloak to detect them all. If you\u2019re running a custom ROM, it\u2019s even more likely that you could run into problems. Still, it\u2019s worth a shot, and you could always try out <a href=\"http:\/\/forum.xda-developers.com\/showthread.php?p=49351848\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">RookCloak+<\/a>, which the developer says is able to unblock a wider range of apps.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t rooted your Android device, take a look at our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/pages\/take-control-android-rooting-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Android Rooting Guide<\/a>. Rooting certainly isn\u2019t for everyone, but if you\u2019re willing to take the dive, the benefits can be huge. After all,\u00a0<a class=\"post__link--sidebar\" href=\"http:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/illegal-root-android-jailbreak-iphone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rooting is (mostly)\u00a0legal<\/a>, and blocking apps for use on rooted devices seems to go against the whole point of rooting \u2014 getting more control over your device.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think of RootCloak?
