available. Google makes it so you can do everything you\u2019d ever want right in the browser. For the things you still can\u2019t do in Chrome\u00a0Google\u00a0is hoping Android apps will bridge the gap. A few weeks ago they <a href=\"http:\/\/phandroid.com\/2014\/09\/11\/android-apps-on-chrome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">released the first batch of apps<\/a>, but we\u2019re hungry for more.<\/p>\n<p>Right now you can only <a href=\"http:\/\/phandroid.com\/2014\/09\/11\/android-apps-on-chrome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">run four Android apps<\/a> and they only work with Chrome OS devices. What if you could run any Android app you wanted? And what if all you needed was a Chrome browser? That would be pretty awesome. Luckily it\u2019s not just something we can dream about. Thanks to some clever hackers\u00a0it\u2019s really possible. Here\u2019s how you can do it!<\/p>\n<h2>Why does this work?<\/h2>\n<p>First, a little history lesson. The software that makes it possible for Android apps to run in Chrome is called the App Runtime for Chrome, or ARC. This software works in the same way that ART allows apps to run on Android phones or tablets. Using these two runtimes allows developers to make their apps available on Chrome without\u00a0any rebuilding. A nifty trick.<\/p>\n<p>ARC was designed to run only on Chrome OS. Developer vladikoff created something called ARChon Custom Runtime so it can be used in Chrome for Windows, Mac, and even Linux. In the process he also removed the limit on how many Android apps can be run in Chrome. So before we get started we must tip our caps to vladikoff for making this possible.<\/p>\n<h2>Install the ARChon Custom Runtime<\/h2>\n<p>The first thing we need to do is get the custom version of ARC installed in your browser. In order to do this you will need Chrome version 37 or higher.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download ARChon <a href=\"https:\/\/bitbucket.org\/vladikoff\/archon\/get\/v1.0.zip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">from\u00a0here<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Unzip the archive<\/li>\n<li>Go to\u00a0your extensions page in Chrome by going to Menu &gt; Tools &gt; Extensions<\/li>\n<li>Enable Developer mode in the top right corner<\/li>\n<li>Select \u201cLoad unpacked extension\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Choose the folder\u00a0where you unzipped ARChon<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>ARChon is now running as a Chrome extension. You will probably see the warning below, but it\u2019s nothing to worry about. Let\u2019s move on to the next step.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cboxElement\" href=\"http:\/\/phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/error.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-149520 colorbox-149495\" src=\"http:\/\/phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/error.png\" alt=\"error\" width=\"564\" height=\"77\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Install Android apps<\/h2>\n<p><a class=\"cboxElement\" href=\"http:\/\/phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/flappy-chrome.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-149536 colorbox-149495\" src=\"http:\/\/phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/flappy-chrome-640x364.png\" alt=\"flappy chrome\" width=\"640\" height=\"364\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re ready to install some Android apps now. This is the real tricky part. Getting an Android app to work in Chrome is not as easy as using the Play Store on your Android device.\u00a0Luckily the Android\/Chrome community is already hard at work finding which apps can work in Chrome. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/chromeapks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">This subreddit<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221219204035\/http:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1iIbxaftAu_ho5rv9fUlXSLTzwU6MbKOldsWXyrYiyo8\/htmlview?usp=sharing&amp;sle=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Google Drive spreadsheet<\/a> are a good place to start looking for apps.<\/p>\n<p>But first, a disclaimer. The distribution of modified apps is not strictly speaking legal. Downloading APKs of free apps is probably not going to make the developer too upset, but paid apps are another story. Don\u2019t use this as an opportunity to steal a bunch of Android apps. Only download APKs from free apps or apps that you already purchased.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, once you have a .zip file containing the APK we are going to install it like we did with ARChon.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Unzip the file and place the folder\u00a0somewhere you will remember<\/li>\n<li>Go back to the\u00a0Extensions page in Chrome<\/li>\n<li>Click \u201cLoad unpacked extensions\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Select the folder with the modified APK you downloaded<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The app should now appear in the app launcher in Chrome, with or without the correct app icon. You will likely see another error message on the extensions page, but it\u2019s fine.<\/p>\n<p>What if the app you want to use hasn\u2019t already been modified for Chrome? It\u2019s time to take matters into your own hands. Proceed with caution. These next steps are not for the faint of heart.<\/p>\n<h2>What if the app I want isn\u2019t listed?<\/h2>\n<p><a class=\"cboxElement\" href=\"http:\/\/phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/command.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-149538 colorbox-149495\" src=\"http:\/\/phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/command-640x347.png\" alt=\"command\" width=\"640\" height=\"347\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Getting an Android app to work in Chrome requires some modification. There is a handy tool that can do all of it for you, but first you will need to obtain the APK of the app you wish to modify. You can use <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.metago.astro&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Astro File Explorer<\/a> to pull installed APKs from your device. Here\u2019s how:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open Astro<\/li>\n<li>Slide open the menu from the left and tap the tools icon<\/li>\n<li>Tap \u201cApp Mgr\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Tap on the apps you wish you pull<\/li>\n<li>Select \u201cBackup\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Go to the new \u201cBackups\u201d folder on your SD card and send the APK to your PC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now it\u2019s time to install the ChromeOS APK Tool to automatically modify the APK. Follow the instructions for the desktop OS you use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Windows<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download the node.js .msi file (not the .exe) <a href=\"http:\/\/nodejs.org\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">from here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Install node.js.<\/li>\n<li>In a command prompt, run the command: npm install chromeos-apk -g<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>OS X\/Linux<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In a terminal, run the command: sudo apt-get install npm<\/li>\n<li>(Ubuntu only): Run the command: sudo apt-get install lib32stdc++6<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/nodejs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Download node.js<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Unzip the tar.gz file you downloaded<\/li>\n<li>Open a terminal to the unzipped folder containing node.js. Run these commands in order:\n<ol>\n<li>.\/configure<\/li>\n<li>make<\/li>\n<li>make install<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Run the command: sudo npm install chromeos-apk -g<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The ChromeOS APK tool should be successfully installed on your PC. Now it\u2019s time to use it!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open a command prompt or terminal in the folder where you saved\u00a0the APK<\/li>\n<li>Run the command: chromeos-apk [NAME OF APK]<\/li>\n<li>Enter the package name of the app if prompted. You can find this in the\u00a0URL of the Play Store listing. This is a nifty way to bring some of your favorite Android apps to the desktop. Hopefully Google makes the process easier someday.
