If you tend to have lots of tabs open during the day, you\u2019ll probably find your computer starts to suffer in the performance stakes, and that\u2019s all down to the way Chrome handles itself.<\/p>\n<p>See, by default Chrome will spawn a new process for each and every tab that you have open. The latest versions of Internet Explorer do the same thing, and the reasoning is actually perfectly sound. With each tab living as its own bespoke process, should that tab crash then your entire browser won\u2019t be taken down with it. That means you won\u2019t lose a dozen tabs all because that Flash Player crashed in the thirteenth tab that you opened. It\u2019s clever, and it works.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Chrome Memory main\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.redmondpie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Chrome-Memory-main.jpg\" alt=\"Chrome Memory main\" width=\"600\" height=\"319\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s a downside in that every new process Chrome spawns needs memory, and if you\u2019re using an already memory-constricted machine, that\u2019s not good. Luckily you can force Chrome to behave differently by appending<em><strong> \u201c<\/strong>\u2013process-per-site\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 to the command used to launch the app. After doing that, Chrome will use one process per website loaded which, in theory at least, could have quite an affect on performance.<\/p>\n<p>You can check how many processes Chrome is using by opening Windows Task Manager and checking the <em>\u2018Processes\u2019<\/em> tab. All those <em>chrome.exe<\/em> entries? They are all tabs.<\/p>\n<p>So what do you need to do?<\/p>\n<p>Step 1: Find the shortcut that you use to launch Chrome, whether that be on your desktop or elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Step 2: Right-click on the shortcut and then click on <em>\u2018Properties.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Screen Shot 2015-02-11 at 6.43.30 pm\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.redmondpie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Screen-Shot-2015-02-11-at-6.43.30-pm.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-02-11 at 6.43.30 pm\" width=\"352\" height=\"445\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Step 3: Click on the<em> \u2018Shortcut\u2019<\/em> tab up on top and then paste the following at the end of the <em>\u2018Target\u2019<\/em>field as shown in the screenshot below:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u2013process-per-site<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Screen Shot 2015-02-11 at 6.44.01 pm\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.redmondpie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Screen-Shot-2015-02-11-at-6.44.01-pm.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-02-11 at 6.44.01 pm\" width=\"602\" height=\"431\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Step 4: Close Chrome and re-open it.<\/p>\n<p>Step 5: Marvel as your machine now uses less processes than before.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully you\u2019ll find that you have considerably less processes running now and, as a result, Chrome should be using less memory.<\/p>\n<p>Nice and simple, yet affective.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.redmondpie.com\/how-to-tweak-google-chrome-browser-to-use-less-memory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>comments<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019re big fans of Google Chrome here, but even we admit that it can destroy a computer\u2019s performance with alarming regularity simply by spawning too many processes during the course of a typical day of usage.
