Some, like global campaigning group Avaaz or airline company JetBlue, embrace working from home. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2014\/05\/06\/national_study_of_employers_finds_that_support_for_workplace_flexibility.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Others<\/a>\u2014most famously\u00a0Yahoo\u2014ban it.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the internet made instant mass communication,\u00a0and scaleable home businesses,\u00a0possible long ago, but some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/small-business-network\/2014\/oct\/09\/remote-working-office-productive-balance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">remote-working tools<\/a>,\u00a0like online hangouts, video conferencing and group work platforms, have only recently become good enough to function\u00a0really well for large scattered teams.<\/p>\n<p>So you\u2019re one of those people who\u2019s tempted to work from home. But does that mean it\u2019s right for you and\u00a0your employer? Here are some pros and cons to consider.<\/p>\n<p>1.) Seeing more of your loved ones (but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencenewsline.com\/articles\/2011110819450025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">not too much<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Having children is one big reason to work from home, and some \u201cfamily-friendly\u201d policies are designed to allow employees\u00a0to\u00a0weave together\u00a0work and home\u00a0life. Parents who work from home can have breakfast with their kids rather than rushing for a train, and be there when children arrive home from school. A <a href=\"http:\/\/web.stanford.edu\/~nbloom\/SMJ879.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2010 study<\/a> found that family-friendly policies make people happier. They also make firms more successful, but only when combined with other effective management practices.<\/p>\n<p>While more family time may be attractive,\u00a0working from home\u00a0doesn\u2019t mean avoiding childcare bills. Mumsnet, an online forum for parents, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mumsnet.com\/jobs\/working-from-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">is unequivocal<\/a>: \u201cYou will be doing yourself and your employers \/ clients no good at all if you are working from your laptop at the soft play centre\u2026looking after children is one job, doing a paid job is another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2.) Controlling your environment<\/p>\n<p>For anyone who has worked in overheated, noisy or windowless office, being master of one\u2019s own space is pure joy. You can look out of the window at the first leaves of Spring and\u2014even better\u2014open that window for some fresh\u00a0air. Best of all, it\u2019s peaceful. In \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.stanford.edu\/~nbloom\/WFH.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a\u00a02014 Stanford study<\/a> of China\u2019s largest travel agency, Ctrip, home workers made\u00a04% more\u00a0calls than their office counterparts, which the study\u2019s authors attributed to \u201ca quieter and more convenient working environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exercise can\u00a0also be easier. Increasingly we\u2019re told to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-30812439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">get up from our desks<\/a>, walk more, stretch, and give our eyes a break from the screen. Many offices don\u2019t make that easy. (Try simply lying on the office floor for a couple of back-relaxing minutes, and see what reaction you get).<\/p>\n<p>3.) Losing the commute<\/p>\n<p>If you spend hours on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/datablog\/2014\/feb\/12\/how-does-commuting-affect-wellbeing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">London\u2019s overstuffed Tube<\/a>\u00a0each day, trek across a polluted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.china.org.cn\/top10\/2012-11\/02\/content_26980425.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Beijing<\/a> or drive through rush-hour traffic to get to work, canceling the commute sounds like paradise. And it is\u2014in some ways. You\u00a0get whole, juicy hours handed back to you every day. But for some, those hours are then spent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171122164238\/http:\/\/blog.hreonline.com\/2014\/06\/02\/telework-may-harmful-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">working<\/a> rather than relaxing.\u00a0Imposing boundaries becomes important, and finding ways to delineate workday from free time can help.<\/p>\n<p>Another downside:\u00a0Walking and cycling to work provides exercise, and the journey plus\u00a0change of location can make for a useful break between work time and leisure. Home workers have to find ways to get out, jogging in the morning or arranging late-afternoon meetings away from the home, to break the day into distinct sections. Like so much of the working-from-home juggling act, it all comes down to\u2026<\/p>\n<p>4.) Discipline. It\u2019s important. And loneliness can be a problem<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the word most associated with working from home is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&amp;ion=1&amp;espv=2&amp;ie=UTF-8#q=work%20from%20home%20discipline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">discipline<\/a>. The need for self-discipline, to keep concentrating without the oversight of a watchful manager, is often touted. For some, that\u2019s spurious: A quiet room at home, free from distractions, can be a better place to concentrate than a busy office.\u00a0For others, it\u2019s truly a challenge.\u00a0The presence and energy of colleagues can spur some people on to work harder and achieve more.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the Ctrip study, half the people who had worked from home elected to go back to the office, especially those who had found lack of social contact difficult.\u00a0Working from home isn\u2019t for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>After weighing the pros and cons, you\u00a0still\u00a0want to give home working a try. Now, comes the hard part:\u00a0Selling it to your boss.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty of theorizing about whether home working makes for lazier employees or happier ones, a more coherent team or one with\u00a0no\u00a0identity, but the Ctrip study\u00a0was one of the first to\u00a0apply scientific testing conditions to the question. The authors divided a group of 249 Shanghai travel\u00a0center workers into home-working and control groups and monitored them over nine months. It\u2019s conclusion: Home working led to a 13% performance increase. What\u2019s more,\u00a0Ctrip saved $2,000 a year per employee on office space, higher performance, and fewer people quitting.<\/p>\n<p>The company rolled out the option to the whole all workers\u00a0as a result of the study. Only some chose to, but in\u00a0the self-selected group of home workers, productivity rose by 22%.
