Apparently, a lot of other people are interested in Notepad++ too. My introductory post on Notepad++ is the most popular post on my speechblog. I have a feeling that that is about to change.<\/p>\n<p>Since the release of version 4.9, the Notepad++ Find and Replace commands have been updated. There is now a new\u00a0<i>Extended<\/i>\u00a0search mode that allows you to search for tabs(\\t), newline(\\r\\n), and a character by its value (\\o, \\x, \\b, \\d, \\t, \\n, \\r and \\\\). Unfortunately, the Notepad++ documentation is lacking in its description of these new capabilities. I found Anjesh Tuladhar&#8217;s excellent slides on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/anjesh\/the-power-of-regular-expression-use-in-notepad\/\">regular expressions in Notepad++<\/a>\u00a0useful. After six hours of trial and error, I managed to bend Notepad++ to my will. And so I decided to post what I think is the most detailed step-by-step guide to Search and Replace in Notepad++, and certainly the most detailed guide to cleaning up DMDX .zil output files on the internet.<\/p>\n<p><b>What&#8217;s so good about Extended search mode?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>One of the major disadvantages of using regular expressions in Notepad++ was that it did not handle the newline character well\u2014especially in\u00a0<i>Replace<\/i>. Now, we can use\u00a0<i>Extended\u00a0<\/i>search mode to make up for this shortcoming. Together,\u00a0<i>Extended\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0<i>Regular Expression<\/i>\u00a0search modes give you the power to search, replace and reorder your text in ways that were not previously possible in Notepad++.<\/p>\n<p><b>Search modes in the Find\/Replace interface<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b>In the\u00a0<i>Find\u00a0<\/i>(Ctrl+F) and\u00a0<i>Replace\u00a0<\/i>(Ctrl+H) dialogs, the three available search modes are specified in the bottom right corner. To use a search mode, click on the radio button before clicking the\u00a0<i>Find Next<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>Replace\u00a0<\/i>buttons.<a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHbq1B0wYlI\/AAAAAAAAALI\/h21UEYMEivc\/s1600-h\/np%2B%2Breplace.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5221619014726345298\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHbq1B0wYlI\/AAAAAAAAALI\/h21UEYMEivc\/s400\/np%2B%2Breplace.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Cleaning up a DMDX .zil file<\/b><\/p>\n<p>DMDX allows you to run experiments where the user responds by using the mouse or some other input device. Depending on the number of choices\/responses (and of course the kind of task), DMDX will output a .zil file containing the results (instead of the traditional .azk file). This is specified in the header along with the various response options available to the participant. For some reason, DMDX outputs the reaction time twice\u2014and on separate lines\u2014in .zil files. Here&#8217;s a guide for cleaning up these messy .zil files with Notepad++. Explanations of the Notepad++ search terms are provided in bullet points at the end of each step.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 1:<\/b>\u00a0Backup your original result file (e.g. yourexperiment.zil) and create a copy of that file (yourexperiment_copy.zil) that we will edit and clean up.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 2:<\/b> Open yourexperiment_copy.zil in Notepad++ (version 4.9 or later).<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHdxN53OxaI\/AAAAAAAAALU\/iMGen376Eag\/s1600-h\/step2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHdxN53OxaI\/AAAAAAAAALU\/7UxbChCO6Dw\/s400-R\/step2.png\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b>Step 3:\u00a0<\/b>Remove all error messages.All lines containing DMDX error messages begin with an exclamation mark. Let&#8217;s get rid of them.<\/p>\n<p>Bring up the\u00a0<i>Replace\u00a0<\/i>dialog box (Ctrl+H) and select the\u00a0<i>Regular Expression<\/i>\u00a0search mode.<\/p>\n<p>Find what:\u00a0[!].*<\/p>\n<p>Replace with:\u00a0(leave this blank)<\/p>\n<p>Press\u00a0<i>Replace All<\/i>. All the error messages are gone.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHdx6RfwPBI\/AAAAAAAAALc\/lDEXS3IXN6c\/s1600-h\/step3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHdx6RfwPBI\/AAAAAAAAALc\/puvJz-TP52w\/s400-R\/step3.png\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>[!] finds the exclamation character.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>.* selects the rest of the line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Step 4:\u00a0<\/b>Get rid of all these blank lines.<\/p>\n<p>Switch to\u00a0<i>Extended\u00a0<\/i>search mode in the Replace dialog.<\/p>\n<p>Find what:\u00a0\\r\\n\\r\\n<\/p>\n<p>Replace with:\u00a0(leave this blank)<\/p>\n<p>Press\u00a0<i>Replace All<\/i>. All the blank lines are gone.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHdymSGxY9I\/AAAAAAAAALk\/q7CYnv0s6oY\/s1600-h\/step4.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHdymSGxY9I\/AAAAAAAAALk\/Kg-gepzxXKY\/s400-R\/step4.png\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\\r\\n is a newline character (in Windows).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\\r\\n\\r\\n finds two newline characters (what you get from pressing Enter twice).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Step 5:<\/b>\u00a0Put each Item (DMDXspeak for trial) on a new line.<\/p>\n<p>Switch to\u00a0<i>Regular Expression\u00a0<\/i>search mode.<\/p>\n<p>Find what:\u00a0(\\+.*)(Item)<\/p>\n<p>Replace with:\u00a0\\1\\r\\n\\2<\/p>\n<p>Press\u00a0<i>Replace All<\/i>. &#8220;Item&#8221;s have been placed on new lines.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHdzQbLG05I\/AAAAAAAAALs\/_BxTKt1SHyE\/s1600-h\/step5.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHdzQbLG05I\/AAAAAAAAALs\/2CCzLt6hUkE\/s400-R\/step5.png\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\\+ finds the + character.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>.* selects the text after the + up until the word &#8220;Item&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Item finds the string &#8220;Item&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>() allow us to access whatever is inside the parentheses. The first set of parentheses may be accessed with \\1 and the second set with \\2.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\\1\\r\\n\\2 will take + and whatever text comes after it, will then add a new line, and place the string &#8220;Item&#8221; on the new line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So far so good. Our aim now is to delete duplicate or redundant information (reaction time data).<\/p>\n<p><b>Step 6:<\/b>\u00a0Remove all newline characters using\u00a0<i>Extended\u00a0<\/i>search mode, replacing them with a unique string of text that we will use as a signpost for redundant data later in\u00a0<i>RegEx<\/i>. Choose a string of text that does not appear in you .zil file\u2014I have chosen\u00a0<i>mork<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Switch to\u00a0<i>Extended\u00a0<\/i>search mode in the\u00a0<i>Replace\u00a0<\/i>dialog.<\/p>\n<p>Find what:\u00a0\\r\\n<\/p>\n<p>Replace with:\u00a0mork<\/p>\n<p>Press\u00a0<i>Replace All<\/i>. All the newline characters are gone. Your entire DMDX .zil file is now one very long line of (in my case word-wrapped) text.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHdztxdS0LI\/AAAAAAAAAL0\/JeS4xrDrb8w\/s1600-h\/step6.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHdztxdS0LI\/AAAAAAAAAL0\/ZNjMuWpj_Aw\/s400-R\/step6.png\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b>Step 7:<\/b>\u00a0We&#8217;re nearly there. Using our\u00a0<i>mork\u00a0<\/i>signpost keyword, let&#8217;s separate the different RT values.<\/p>\n<p>Stay in\u00a0<i>Extended<\/i>\u00a0search mode.<\/p>\n<p>Find what:\u00a0,<\/p>\n<p>Replace with:\u00a0,mork<\/p>\n<p>Press\u00a0<i>Replace All<\/i>. Now,\u00a0<i>mork\u00a0<\/i>appears after every comma.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 8:<\/b>\u00a0Let&#8217;s put the remaining Items on new lines.<\/p>\n<p>Switch to and stay in\u00a0<i>Regular Expression<\/i>\u00a0search mode for the remaining steps.<\/p>\n<p>Find what:\u00a0mork(Item)<\/p>\n<p>Replace with:\u00a0\\r\\n\\1<\/p>\n<p>Press\u00a0<i>Replace All<\/i>. All &#8220;Item&#8221;s should now be on new lines.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHd0Shei4PI\/AAAAAAAAAL8\/GrWALt8tq8w\/s1600-h\/step8.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHd0Shei4PI\/AAAAAAAAAL8\/ItNZcYi6xYU\/s400-R\/step8.png\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><b>Step 9:<\/b>\u00a0Let&#8217;s get rid of those duplicate RTs.<\/p>\n<p>Find what:\u00a0mork ([^A-Za-z]*)mork [^A-Za-z]*\\,mork<\/p>\n<p>Replace with:\u00a0\\1,<\/p>\n<p>Press\u00a0<i>Replace All<\/i>. Duplicate reaction times are gone. It&#8217;s starting to look like a result file \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHd06ioRtMI\/AAAAAAAAAME\/EOp7PcqsfWU\/s1600-h\/step9.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_RrGIVCQs3RU\/SHd06ioRtMI\/AAAAAAAAAME\/OwiW292p8A0\/s400-R\/step9.png\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>A-Z finds all letters of the alphabet in upper case.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>a-z finds all lower case letters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>A-Za-z will find all alphabetic characters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>[^&#8230;] is the inverse. So, if we put these three together: [^A-Za-z] finds any character\u00a0<u>except<\/u>\u00a0an alphabetic character.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Notice that only one of the [^A-Za-z] is in parentheses (). This is recalled by \\1 in the Replace with field. The characters outside of the parentheses are discarded.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Step 10:<\/b>\u00a0Let&#8217;s get rid of all those morks.<\/p>\n<p>Find what:\u00a0mork<\/p>\n<p>Replace with:\u00a0(leave blank)<\/p>\n<p>Press\u00a0<i>Replace All<\/i>. The morks are gone.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 11:<\/b>\u00a0Separate each participant&#8217;s data from the next.<\/p>\n<p>Find what:\u00a0(\\**\\*)<\/p>\n<p>Replace with:\u00a0\\r\\n\\r\\n\\1\\r\\n\\r\\n<\/p>\n<p>Press\u00a0<i>Replace All<\/i>.
